ONE POWER SOLUTION

Featured Success Story

San Diego Gas & Electric

Utilizing our affiliate company, TCI of Alabama, Transformer Technologies successfully removed equipment from 5 separate substations in Southern California. Two substations required removal of transformers, circuit breakers, lattice towers and auxilliary equipment; Two substations required removal of untested bushings; and One substation required removal of two large transformers. Transformer Technologies arranged the Hazardous Material hauling and worked with TCI of Alabama to test and process the bushings. All transportation, crane work, and demolition was coordinated to minimize substation disruption and fit the customer's schedule.

Hydro-Electric Plants

Mossy Rock Dam

To make way for new units, Tacoma Power needed to remove three single phase transformers and related iso-bus. Transformer Technologies pulled the bushings and removed the radiators to prepare the units for movement. We contracted an equipment mover to jack & rolled the units off the transformer deck. Each transformer was further downsized prior to hauling to Salem for final destruction.

PacifiCorp Hornbrook

Transformer Technologies was presented with a unique opportunity - remove three large single phase transformers from an environmentally sensitive area of a hydro electric facility, only accessible via a severely load limited bridge. Our solution was to dismantle the units in place, significantly downsize all material, and shuttle the material across the bridge - No cranes or large trailers were required. All work was performed to the customer's satisfaction, while still providing positive revenue.

Gorge Dam

The facility operator required removal of four 80,000 KVA Single-Phase transformers from a hydroelectric power plant in the North Cascades. The only access into the plant was over a one lane bridge and through a tunnel. The transformers were positioned directly over the Skagit River, requiring the utmost in environmental care. Transformer Technologies arranged for specialized rigging and transportation. Hydraulic jack stands carefully rotated each unit from a vertical to a horizontal position.  Once horizontal, the units were placed on a heavy-haul lowboy trailer, moved through the tunnel, and transported across the bridge. All four units were removed in one week, with no environmental issues and no operational impact.

US Bureau of Reclamation Nimbus Dam
Sacramento, CA

Gardner-Zemke was awarded a contract to upgrade the transmission system at the Nimbus Dam, located on the American River. Included in the scope of work was replacement of an old transformer and removal of lead sheathed cable. Transformer Technologies arranged for recycling of the transformer oil, movement and recycling of the old transformer, removal of the lead cable, and disposal of the High-PCB bushings. A Certified Industrial Hygienist was hired to develop specific lead handling procedures and provide air quality monitoring. This project required significant front end planning, detailed work plan submittals with government pre-approval, and a tight work schedule.
